As long as they don't log out (which may require clearing cookies), being banned doesn't even allow someone to *browse* the forums. It takes them right to a splash page saying they're banned, thanks, go away. IIRC, anyway - it's been years since I last looked at that. ... Anyway, if you're the type to just randomly open the forums for a look, yeah, it works.

The forums have a number of anti-spam, anti-advertisement defenses. Like the delays before you can create threads, or the post count for links and images. One of those is that if the forum doesn't like someone's initial few posts, for whatever reason, they're held up until a mod looks them over and approves them. I was looking at someone's posts before clicking that button.

@QueenAthy I got tired of explaining to people that bans come in preset lengths, so these days when someone asks for a random ban I just approximate. They can always just show back up and ask to be banned again.
