..I UGLY BAWLED!!!...Kyle and Uncle Bill!!!...my throat and heart hurts so much from the pain...it's so heavy and hard to accept...I sobbed for Riette and softly cried for Leyla and Matthias...this story is beautiful...it may not be the ideal love and ending everyone wants, but they complete the puzzle...I thank Solche for giving us such a story to engage and dissect characters who draw on our diff. views, morals and opinions...

    Hello!
I agree with you. No one has ideal life as the ideal love.
Characters are complex at first it might seem that they are simple, but the more you read the more you will discover their depth. Solche well described all characters. The story is written so that readers can feel it.

And want to add some points about uncle Bill, he also traumatized Layla.
He pushed ideology of being “Outstanding adult”, albeit he never tried to explain what does mean to be “outstanding adult” Though I can’t blame him because he whole his life was just gardener. He had no child. He didn’t know how to rise the child. All he knew was how to “grow beautiful roses”. As so flowers needn’t “emotional care” he knew only take care physically, that’s why he rose Layla as “Arvis’s rose” i.e cared for her “physically”.
“The place where she resided was always full of roses in full bloom.”

Totally 100% agree with you. I bawled about Uncle Bill and Riette's fate. When it comes to Kyle, I always wonder the If scenario "If Kyle put Layla's need first and stand for her, will he stand a chance?" :blob_teary: And yes, they discussed very sensitive topics (that I usually do not like). But yes, as you said, Solche gave us a story to dissect. She didn't write it as it is. She wanted us to analyse and think about the real motivation behind every characters. I wonder if there will be a novel as deep as this again...

Glad that you enjoy the novel. Which part do you like the most @Emina_10 ?

I don't wanna live in that era. Honestly. Especially if you are a woman. sigh..

I was also wondering, how did Matthias grew up never experiencing love and affection?
When Riette said "Matthias doesn't know love."
Wow that is deep. So he is really learning how to 'love' through his experience with Layla. That is probably how we could see his love progression very clearly. From desire to crush to obsessive love to absolute love. I like that realistic path! I wonder if we see clear progression in Layla's love? @Spidey1Fan

First of all, I love Bill. He is a man that truly care and love Layla. But unfortunately, he couldn't express and teach that to Layla. Sometimes he reminded me of an Asian dad that usually don't talk much. They focus more on your physical well-being. That is their proof of love. But I think as a child coming from deep childhood trauma, Layla really need more than physical care. :blobsob:

That is why I love it when she said at the end
" It is so weird. No one likes a crying orphan child."
This is really deeply connected to her trauma as a child :blobsad: Meanwhile our so called 'psycho' boy loves every sides of her, eventhough his most favorite is when Layla smiles. That was when Layla understood that she was loved, eventhough she is not in her best self.

I believe, Bill could do it too if Layla was brave enough to show her weaknesses. But yea, maybe she was low-key scared she would be abandoned is she shows her dark side? :notlikeblob: @moonlight07

By the way people, it is almost Tuesday again. Can't wait for the next manhwa chapter to be out!!

    Ahaha, I love your reply!

Well, I think so, if she wasn’t terrified being rejected, she could show her weakness and ill mentality. But sigh, her fear was beyond her logical thinking. When she came to uncle Bill, the first thing she thought was “Be polite and smile”. She thought if she will be polite and would smile brightly she will be accepted and not be rejected. It’s so sad when 11 y.o. kid thinks in this way.

Here want to add about uncle Bill’s awareness of her problems, I remember that at first chapter of the manhwa when uncle Bill asked Layla:

    “Aren’t you scared?”

    She answered:

“No. You don’t shout at me or hit me. And you give me delicious amount of food like this.”

At that moment uncle Bill understood that she was abused. So, I can tell he knew about her traumas, but as I mentioned he took care of her “physically”. He didn’t know how to take care emotionally and support. Though I’m glad that he supported her financially and helped her to be educated.

I love the endings for all the characters. It was tragic but also realistic. Bill's ending was so bittersweet. Bill did his best to be a good Father for Layla.

Ok, I still envy you @Spidey1Fan that you could upload a picture already :(

By the way, it is very sad that there will be no update of the manhwa this week. It seems that Van J lost her data for the upcoming update. :blob_teary:

So we would have to wait until next week. We expected the next update will be about Layla, Claudine and Matthias having a cafe meet-up. Here will be when Claudine will test Matthias :blobokhand:

Oh yes, it should be the moment when they met at the town. After Claudine will invite Layla to have a cup of tea with them. Claudine is a good strategyzer. I was looking forward to this chapter, sigh:(

    Hey All,

I am back from the English webtoon and found out that, a lot of people are having 2nd lead syndrome with Kyle (oh Kyle... :( )
So I think it can be nice to have a discussion of why do I think Layla could not accept Kyle at the end (beside the fact that he is the 2nd ML).

I personally think, Kyle could have a chance if he was patience enough to wait for Layla and fought for her (since his biggest enemy is his mom and not Matthias in this case). That of course can happen only if Layla gave him a chance. But she never did to the very end for a single reason.

Layla never see Kyle as a man. She sees her as a brother and best friend. She wanted to keep Kyle in her life forever, but not as her partner but as a best friend. That was why she said she hated growing up, knowing one day they had to separate.

So why did she accepted her proposal? Because she thought the only way to keep Kyle in her life is by accepting his proposal. Also, she did want to go to college. She thought it could be a great idea to do both. But Kyle's mom (yes that annoying mom), knew that Layla never love Kyle, so she attacked Layla's biggest weakness, her pride.

We might think, oh but Kyle's mom gave back the money at the end, why didn't Layla take the chance?

As an orphan, Layla's life value is to keep her head high despite of whatever background she had. If Layla continued with the proposal, she was basically losing her pride. Because Kyle's mom prejudice "that Layla only used Kyle to go to college" came true. That's why Layla could never continue with the proposal. Even though the duke said that he saw Mrs Ettman's cousin, still Layla would choose the same. Because Mrs Ettman attacked Layla's pride first and foremost.

So, I think her decision to let go of Kyle is one of her most matured decision. She didn't want to mislead Kyle. She wanted the best for Kyle eventhough that means she is losing her best friend :blob_teary: and she truly grieved for losing a best friend in her life.

So what do you think about Kyle? :blobwink:

This is a really good summary about Kyle! @mireimisty I agree with your analysis why Layla doesn't accept Kyle's proposal in the end.

I really like Kyle as a character in the story. He actions and emotions are remarkably realistic. Solche's narratons for each character are truly incredible. I can truly feel Kyle's high emotions of sadness, jealousy, love and anger. Solche's narrations are so well written that you seamlessly experience their emotions as a reader. Kyle hates Matthias so I can really feel his hatred.

My first read I had a lot of pity for Kyle. On my second read I can recognize Layla's true feelings for Kyle. Layla (with an emphasis on this word), CONSISTENTLY, viewed Kyle as her best friend/brother. She valued and loved Kyle as her as a sibling, never as a potential lover.

I do believe that people have multiple soulmates and you can fall in love with someone over a long time. Yes, maybe Layla could have viewed Kyle romantically in the future. But, Layla doesn't choose or view him that way. In my view, a successful marriage is when both partners continuously choosing each other, no matter the challenges they encounter. The reality of marriage is not easy. There are numerous hardships and life challenges that test your vows but both partners have to work together and both make sacrifices. I do appreciate Layla's ability to forgive Matthias in the end. Despite his mistakes, he proved to be a great husband and father. Recognizing that we all make mistakes and none of us are perfect, I believe forgiveness is crucial in relationships. While issues like infidelity and addiction pose unique challenges, I specifically address the importance of forgiveness in the context of being hurt by someone. Your partner accepts the best and worst parts of yourself.

I do think Kyle failed in action and promises. Keeping promises is an important attritube for Layla. Layla's Mom breaks her promises to return. Matthias never breaks any of his promises.

    1) Banquet Chapter - Kyle takes Layla as his date then breaks his promise and abandons Layla at the banquet. Kyle doesn't buy Layla's dress for the banquet. Matthias is the person who purchases Layla's dress and necklace so she wouldn't be ridiculed by the nobles. Matthias never reveals this act because his actions are out of sincerety not for recognition. (Remember the end side story that Layla believes her Uncle bought the necklace and it brought her immense happy memory of Bill so Matthias never tells her the truth? That's absolute love.) Matthias recognizes that Kyle abandoned Layla at the banquet. Matthias thinks how this foolish kid is in puppy love and doesn't accept reality. Matthias understands the reality of their world. It's very difficult for people to marry across social classes in this historical setting. Matthias spends more time with Layla than Kyle at the banquet. Did Layla cry because Matthias told Layla to cry? Or was it because she realized what Matthias said was true, "Kyle isn't coming." Which is what happened, Kyle didn't return. Layla tells a servant she left.

    2) Ch. 93 "I Love Him" - This is one of my favorite chapters because of the suspense! Kyle discovers Layla and Matthias's affair in the most unfortunate manner imaginable. I completely understand Kyle's shock, hatred, pain, jealousy and sadness. It's a very intense scene! Solche does a good job to make readers empathize with Kyle. The second time I read it was very hurtful when Kyle yells at Layla, "Don't touch me!" while she tries to console him. Layla is in shock as Kyle has never yelled at her like that before. Kyle leaves Layla and eventually leaves Arvis. Kyle doesn't console Layla. Again, I understand Kyle's reasoning but from Layla's point of view Kyle leaves her and she blames herself. Matthias doesn't abandon Layla when Layla hurts Matthias. Layla is angry that her and Kyle's friendship is gone and she blames Matthias. I do think Layla misdirects her anger for Kyle and Claudine at Matthias. Kyle abandons Layla when she really needed a friend. However, Kyle knows the truth before Layla. I think this is an important passage from the book.

    Ch. 117: Forever Ignorant

Kyle remembers Layla's tear-covered face saying, "I love him." from ch. 93.

"He knew she wanted him to believe that it was just a lie she had told to protect him, but he had seen through that. When he had gone to the cottage and seen the two of them together, he had known at once that she really was in love with the duke. Otherwise, there was nothing the duke could have done to make her accept is affections. She would have rather died. That was who she was."

Kyle knew that Layla and Matthias were in love before then even realized the truth.

    3) The War - Matthias joins the war to find Layla. Kyle never makes an effort to find Layla. Despite Layla's deception and departure from Arvis, Matthias persists in searching for her. Layla's well-being is dependenet on Matthias finding her, Uncle Bill had just passed way, and Layla was neglecting her basic needs. When you read on the surface it seems a possessive move but Layla needed Matthias to find her on the warfront. Layla didn't want to see Matthias because she thought he was married to Claudine at this point. Stupidly, Matthias never tells Layla he broke off his engagement with Claudine. Kyle never tells Layla that Matthias broke off his engagement, selfish? Fortunately, Riette tells Layla the truth about Matthias enlisting the war with the singular goal of locating Layla. Matthias keeps his promise to return to Layla after the war.

Kyle's Resolution - Kyle's conclusion of his character arc is bittersweet and realistic. I'm going to post his final line as I personally found it very moving.

    SS15

"His memories of the girl who had dominated his childhood years were still vivid in his mind. They would remian a part of him for the rest of his life. He now accepted this without bitterness. Just because they didn't end up together, that didn't mean that his love for her was meaningless. Thanks to Layla, that part of his life as beautiful, and he believed that having that beauty in his childhood helped him to grow to be a better person than he would have otherwise become. Layla was not just his former lover, she was his best firend. She was like a sister to him. I'm so happy to have known you. Thank you for being a part of my life."

Our first love doesn't always work out but cherishing your memory is an essential step to move forward. Kyle chose to cherish his memory of Layla versus filling his heart with hate. An important lesson of adulthood. You think your first love is the right one but Kyle will find someone who cherishes him the same.

Yeah is the same delulu from insta as well, insulting everyone who doesn't agree with her (calling them ignorants), the psycho use 24/7 of her life to rant over Layla, she believes she's a psychologist and that nobody can understand Matthias as she does, not even Solche, she's a joke, some ppl from manhwa community started blocking her.

Guys, I wanna ask which moment from the story made you cry?
Which moment was the most touching for you?

For me, I cried twice while reading:

    1.When uncle Bill died. (Chapter.125)

Layla: “If we’re born again in another life, I’ll find you and become part of your family again. It will just be a brief parting, and then a reunion.”

    “I love you, Dad.”

Just then, as if God had changed His mind, Bill was able to utter a single sentence: “I… love you.” Smiling, Bill whispered again, “I love you, my daughter.”

When I wake up, maybe I’ll be embarrassed I said that, but oh well. It’s not so bad. After all, it’s true. And it will never stop being true.

Very emotionally written, they both accepted their position as father and daughter. Both realized that all this time they were each other a true family.

The 11 y.o. orphan girl was his family, his daughter whom he cherished more.
The uncle who adopted her was her most wanted family, her home, her safe world and father who raised her.

    2. When Riette died and Claudine received his “love letter” with the news of his death at the same time. (Chapter.144)

It was very agonizing moment for Claudine.

Curled up on the floor, Claudine started sobbing again. ….. Now she was alone again, Claudine started wailing even more vehemently. She could hardly remember how she had ended up on the floor, sobbing like this. She had simply read the letter. After a sleepless night, morning had come, and then, finding the morning unbearable, she had simply picked up the letter again and read it.

“I love you, Claudine. I know what you’re afraid of. Perhaps what you’re fearing will become a reality. But Claudine, I promise you that I’ll love you so much, you’ll forget about all of that.”

After sending that letter, in which he declared his absolute love and commitment to her, he died.

"So that’s it, she flatly thought. You sent me that letter full of your passionate love for me, and then you died. The man whose death I wished for continues to walk the earth, while you, the man I was waiting for, are gone. You vanished before I could ever tell you I love you. Well, I love you, Riette. I love you, I love you, I love you. That’s all I had to say you, but I never could. Why did it have to be like this? Why?"

It was so torturous that Claudine couldn’t even to say about her feelings. She whole her life loved him but never could to tell him about it. Unspoken words will hurt her forever.

Both scenes are so tragic. I love how Layla and Bill finally accepted their Father and Daughter relationship. It was so bittersweet.

If only Claudine told Riette the truth but she was waiting for Matthias to die first. Claudine was consumed with hate.

The scene that also had me in tears was when Matthias fulfilled his promise for Layla when he returned to her after the war. She was climbing a tree, just like before their first kiss, and Matthias appears. Matthias shows her the white ribbon she tied on his wrist. Matthias returned to Layla just like her Arvis birds, he kept his promise. Matthias was also finally a free bird at Arvis, no longer a called canary, but Layla's free bird. It feels like a full circle for what they both needed from one another. Matthias needed to be free for himself and Layla.
