Why was Layla so obsessed with the idea of being an outstanding adult?

Let’s start from the beginning. How did she get this idea, the main goal of her life?

On chapter 3. Layla was with Claudine, and before leaving Claudine said: “I can’t believe it. She’s no better than a puppy.” Those words hurt her deeply. Then Claudine’s maid gave her a golden coin. At first Layla refused to take the coin, but after all she took the coin and wanted leave this strange world as soon as possible. All we know what would happen with her while she was running away from that strange world.
So, as I mentioned the coin actually was her pride. She dropped her pride and the duke by stepping on the coin hurt her pride. She felt insignificance. So as her pride got hurt, she was sad when she came to the cottage.

After this incident she worried several days, and uncle Bill noticed her mood swing. While they were dining Layla wanted to give her coin to the uncle Bill, because she wanted to payback for his kindness. But uncle Bill refused to take the coin and cheered her by saying: You earned this money, you worked hard. Welcome to adult life. I’m sure you will become an outstanding adult. On chapter 115. It says:

“Uncle Bill is really smart so maybe I really will be an outstanding adult. I was so happy when he said that! I felt like my heart was twinkling like a beautiful star. I have to become an outstanding adult. That way I can make Uncle Bill happy.”

“My heart was twinkling like a beautiful star” means feeling of immense brightness, radiance and beauty within. It could imply that you felt an overwhelming sense of happiness, love, or inspiration that made your heart shine brightly. Like a feeling life during the depression or seeing brightness through the dark. Before that she had no dream, her goal was stabile life with any of relatives. All she wanted was family and care. So now she got family, she was cared by Bill, her goal was achieved. Now after Bill’s words she got new goal, the goal of her life, new dream and obsession. Her dream was her obsession.

If dream represents a deep personal desire or a way to validate oneself, it can easily transition into an obsession when the pursuit becomes all-consuming.

    1. Personal desire: She wanted to become an outstanding adult to make happy uncle Bill. Because when he was happy, he laughed loudly and Layla loved sound of his laugh.

    2. Self-affirmation: Before coming to Arvis everyone in her life called her stupid orphan. Her nephews said that she would live on the streets and then become a hooker. But she didn’t want to live on the streets or to become hooker either. Also, that time (when she got new dream) she was feeling insignificant towards nobles. Her self-esteem was lowered again. She didn’t want to be just a stupid orphan nor puppy for nobles. She wanted to grow up into a smart and confident adult.

She was obsessed with the idea to become an outstanding adult. Layla's POV: If she would be “an outstanding adult”, she could make happy uncle Bill, to live up his expectations. Additionally, if she would grow up a smart and respectable adult, she might have been less pity, and the feeling of worthlessness that Matthias and the nobles instilled in her would not have bothered her so much.

Hi! Glad to hear you are enjoying the story. Me too, i can grow attached to the character.

For CEBYB, I must say I am attached to the narratives and not the characters. The narratives intrigued me a lot. It has so many interpretations and meanings.

Don’t worry about the ML. He is actually one of a very interesting character made in the Knovel. But people misjudged him completely because of the narratives. His biggest stupidity is not understanding the social interpretation of a ”mistress”. He is too high in the society that he didn’t know that A Mistress is not intepreted as a good status by the commoners.

That was why when Layla told him that she would live in the shadow forever if she becomes his mistress. He realised directly and went to try to break his engagement. But it was too late, she went away first.

If you have any question about the novel, feel free to post here. I always posted to the forum from time to time as well to ask other well-versed readers when I don’t understand something

Why did Matthias didn't help Layla when she fell from the bicycle nor when she fell at younger age?

Let's analyse at first the historical context of the story to make clear his some "arrogant" actions.

Time and Location of the story
The story of Cry, or Better Yet, Beg took a place in the Empire. This is the location of the story, where is the action of the story taking a place.

From transportation we can guess the period of the timeline is around late 19th century and the beginning of 20th. It was Industrial Revolution era. This is the historical period i.e time of the story, when is the story taking a place.

During the Industrial Revolution, titled nobility still held considerable influence and power in many European societies. They were typically part of the aristocracy, holding hereditary titles such as duke, marquess, earl, viscount, or baron. These titles often came with land ownership and significant wealth.

Rules and regulations between titled nobility and commoners.
    (Matthias “noble” Layla “commoner”)
The relationship between titled nobility and commoners during the Industrial Revolution era was typically governed by a set of social norms, traditions, and legal structures that reinforced the hierarchical nature of society.

Social norms dictated interactions between nobility and commoners. There were strict protocols for addressing nobles, rules about social events and gatherings, and expectations for deference and respect towards those of higher social standing. Also, marriages between nobility were often arranged to maintain wealth, titles, and land within families. Social circles were largely segregated, with limited interaction between the nobility and commoners in many cases.

Why did Matthias didn't help Layla when she fell in front of him?
Please do give attention to the historical period of the story. Matthias who had been the duke since he was 12 y.o. He was dignified, arrogant, respectable nobleman. He was on the top of hierarchy. After The Emperor family The Herhardt family was the most powerful. He was raised under strict norms of noble society and the traditions. That’s why he didn’t help Layla when she fell down. It wasn’t his obligation. The Duke is not obliged to help every fallen person especially if that person wasn't his subordinate. The society norms and hierarchical rules does not oblige the superior to help the inferior in such a minor incidents. Though many of us can think this is a basic humanity that to help the fallen person but again feudalistic sights were often based on hierarchical relationships and social status rather than on broader humanistic values emphasizing individual dignity and equality. Plus, please don’t forget about his introversion, he had difficulties to make connections with people nor express his feelings.

I got a question, my friend is the one who noticed it. But does this novel have a r19 version? Because she read a fan translation regarding chapter 95 and said it was very explicit but when she read the korean raw and the official english chapter, it was very different from the fan translation and was more suited to a r15 version like how it's originally tag as

That's kinda weird asf to do... I really thought they got their hands on a different version or if it was from the physical version (which I don't think the novel has yet). Honestly that's crazy asf because now most readers know that version instead of the original. Wtf was going on in their minds to add self inserts

Yes. FansTL added a lot of things that did not existed in the real novel. Not only that, FansTL translated wrongly the characters, lines and nuances. Some lines are added that never existed in the Yonder translation. It feels almost like a different novel.

I first read in W and then read in Yonder. Its like a total different novel. Matthias in W is a psychopath. He is super different in Yonder. Sigh... Unfortunately, most readers read in FansTL.

Yes, they didn't just added that. They added a lot of unneeded lines too. I think I also complained once of the same on their discord server, which was later corrected.

Pretty sure, the translation was actually not a legit one but an MTL where the translator added their own lines to 'polish' it lol.

I like this look of Leila's. Just the glasses make her look more lively and vibrant. How many MC's in OI do you see wearing glasses?? So this makes her unique.
I do love Matthias more though :blobokhand::aww::aww: (not that I support all that he put her through)

Eh?? Gosh...really? I didn't notice Riette's POV on that. Hmm...will search the chapter again. As we all know, Matthias is a human robot even with his family members and his own fiancé. He didn't even address her first name throughout their engagement period which was also intriguing and ONLY called her name to announce his intention to break off the engagement. This trait served as a detailed description to how he treated his marriage as a public affair. And Layla envied the way he treated Claudine with utmost respect. Geez, Layla, can't you see that when you are feeling close to someone you don't act all prim and proper? You are comfortable by being yourself when you are in their presence. The comparison in her POV sometimes can be infuriatingly annoying to us readers esp we know how Matthias felt truly about her. And remember the shopping scene? Even the shopkeeper noticed shortly that Matthias was head over heels in love with Layla. XP~

By the way, I am currently binge-reading on the war chapters again ;)

Can I ask how different he is? Is he still a black flag or red flag? And how is the real ending for Riette, Claudine and Kyle? If it's okay to ask since I'm sure the spoilers I know are from a false translation

Hi Ailesander! It has been a while. Yes. I totally agree.
Solche wrote this novel mainly from Layla's POV. But once in a while, she wrote from supporting characters perspective to actually give a glimpse who do Matthias reaction look like. For example, in Mark Evers, you could also see how Mark Evers saw extreme changes in his master attitudes when it comes to Layla. He knew instantly when Matthias worked so effectively, it is to spare some time to spend it with Layla. ;)

By the way, I would like to share an interesting analysis from a reader. Do you know that Layla was suspected to have BPD syndrome, due to her childhood abandonment? We, readers are always intrigued of why Layla always assumed the worst for Matthias. After consulting with a psychologist that also read the novel, she mentioned that it is highly possible that Layla has BPD.

BPD is a syndrome that usually triggered from Childhood Trauma. People with BPD's biggest fear is being abandoned (since they have been abandoned before). So, they created a defense mechanism by doing idealizing or devaluating certain people. That is why people in BPD, usually put people either as 'Good' or 'Bad' and nothing in between.

In Layla's case, it is possible that she developed BPD because of her childhood trauma. From that point onwards, her biggest fear was rejection and being left behind (as we can see in the beginning of her meeting with uncle Bill). In the case of Matthias, it seems to make sense that she 'devaluated' Matthias as 'bad' so that she could protect her heart from rejection. Since we already know that Layla had a feeling for Matthias but she felt difference in status. I have always been confused of why Layla had such an intense hatred for Matthias even before knowing him much. Correlating with BPD, for me it makes a lot of sense.

What do you think of this theory?

Hi @Plumpuppeach , I don't like to put a flag on character hahaha. So I'd say, Matthias emotion in Yonder are very well-explained. He felt guilt and remorse. He felt regret and shame. This was not really translated in FansTL.

One major difference that failed to be translated in FansTL is Matthias meeting with Claudine. In FansTL they already assumed that Matthias was meeting Claudine to tell that he has a mistress. But this is completely wrong.

Matthias meeting before Layla ran away, was actually to tell Claudine that he wanted to break the engagement with Claudine. This was not translated at all. Also, in FansTL, it was never mentioned that Matthias went to the lawyer to discuss about breaking the engagement. In Yonder, he WENT to the lawyer directly after he heard that Layla would be 'shadow'.

Oh, and they added a lot of extra lines in the sleeping scenes that never existed. Maybe its good if you wanna read some smuts? Lol.

Riette, Claudine nor Kyle's ending remain the same. The big plot is the same. But the whole nuanced, narratives and emotions are not really translated correctly. Hope it helps! :aww:

Hmm. as far as I know, I think the writer have not posted any 'If' story. Its different with for example the Remarried Empress. Remarried Empress has an 'if' story of Sovieshu. What if Sovieshu stopped the divorce. hahaha.

I think it would be very interesting to see a What 'If' Layla left Arvis and Arvis was never ruined. What would Matthias do.

I personally feel her hatred towards him was just to hide her love and sadness for an unattainable man due to difference in status. As pointed by most readers, it's a coping mechanism to protect herself from being sad which I agreed. And an interesting similar article that I came across was that anger was much easier to manage than sadness. For Layla, her feelings for Matthias were not entirely hatred. Her feelings towards him in the novel to my understanding were described as two sides of a coin.

BPD? Well, theoretically she did seem to tick some of the checkboxes which you pointed out which was the fear of abandonment. Come to think of it, probably that was why she tried so hard to smile for everyone. Just a thought~

Speaking of similar case, I came across a comment in Yonder that stated Matthias possessed people-pleaser personality. What do you think? ~
