For Riftan it doesn't matter if he is the puppet of the king all what he do is for Maxi and he keep the order the way it is. Beautifully description of "his beloved", as he lives for Maxi and will do anything to prevent a bloody war coming, he just wants to leave in peace in Anatol with his wife. Riftan must always have memories of his childhood with Maxi and how danger always attracted her. Well she is too cute and sweet to be mad at her. Maxi tends to have more trust on Kuahel than her husband but she comes from nobility who has been raised in the church. The church tends to lie to their people for their own interests and steal money from their congregants. Maxi wants to have her peaceful life with Riftan in Anatol.

The pope trying to convince Riftan of the offer Aren had to him that he rejected. Kuahel does for his own benefits and Aren, Richt does for their kingdom but unlike them he does for just one person. The pope shows him the Ascalon sword and convince him to join the sword tournament. If he join the sword can go is worthy to hold the sword and if he doesn't, it can go to the wrong hands such as Richt. He has no other choice and accepted his offer. All over Balbourne has heard about the sword tournament and anyone who wins will get the Ascalon sword and nobles are interested watching knights clashing. Riftan doesn't care of winning the sword all he cares is to be with Maxi and her safety. He is going to win in the sword tournament and this time Maxi will see him while she is sitting down on the bleachers. He is doing so peace can stay for a long time and he always does everything for his beloved Maxi. If the sword went to the wrong hands, such as Richt, it would be dangerous and total chaos. The nobles must be betting on money on who will win the sword tournament. Many might be betting on Riftan and maybe others who are of noble status.

I read the machine translated chapters in ridi but couldnt understand some of the parts, but i can guess the fighting actions are super awesome! Riftan thought that there’s nothing in this world he wont do so he will never see Maxi in battlefields again. Thus he is trying so hard to please the kings and nobles in order to maintain the peace treaty among kingdoms. Maxi is left alone in these current chapters because of this. Remembering seeing her covered in blood during wars really triggers his trauma.
I can't wait to read it in its original form and even though Maxi was only covered in blood once in the First War, Riftan certainly won't leave this trauma anytime soon, I agree with you. Round 10 chapters till end...
I think after the 2nd war ended Riftan was really shocked to see Maxi approaching him while covered in blood but it wasnt her blood, it was a monster’s blood The last few chapters after their reunion from the 2nd dragon subjugation are quite boring so the sword fighting scenes are part of the highlights before the book ends

She rather stay and see the match than go where Riftan intended her to go. She goes into the seats and couldn't see Riftan no where in the arena, but then notices, Sidinia, Annette and the Godric twins in the seats and that Riftan defeated his opponent immediately. On that day of the match he defeated other opponents in a minute. Riftan is known for swift victories. Maxi is accepting Riftan being a knight just as he accepted her being a mage. Riftan had no choice as he was forced to be in the tournament, he rather finished and be over it as he rather be with his wife. Riftan you shouldn't be angry, Maxi just wanted to see you as she can't see you all day. Riftan can defeat his opponents in seconds and he is a sword master for a reason. Many in the seats were supporting Riftan, but he must feel unbothered even fighting his opponents in this match. All what he wants to do is the sake for Maxi.

Both get out of the alley and Maxi notices Richt and Maxi wants to go but then Richt bothers Riftan and that he is going to cripple his dog tomorrow and Riftan will do it on him. Maxi wants to know who is it and Riftan tells her it might be Uly or Hebaron. His men's won't back down because Richt holds a grudge on him and Maxi was just worried and Riftan shouldn't been sarcastic. Next day she is in the stadium and is really full so she sits where the nobility is. Maxi is going to be ready because she wants to conceive. Whoever is going to fight Richt is going to be hard sword battle and might loose. Riftan is going to humilate him in the arena. The stadium was full, many want too see the Wigrew incarnation are going to swordfight, many are betting on Riftan to win at the end.
