[DVD Exclusive Interview] Sita Sings the Blues | by Nina Paley

Sita is a goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband Rama. Nina is an animator whose husband moves to India, then dumps her by email. Three hilarious shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. Set to the 1920's jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as "the Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told."

Building Stop-Motion Masterpieces by Hand

Great Big Story - 18.05.2017
Phil Tippett has spent a lifetime in the film industry, working as a model-maker, visual effects supervisor, director and stop-motion animator. He's been involved with big-name productions such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and RoboCop among others. But his real passion lies in handmade stop-motion animation. For over 30 years, Tippett has been working on an incredibly detailed film called "Mad God". He describes it as being set "in a Milton-esque world of monsters, mad scientists and war pigs." Amazingly, each character is painstakingly constructed by hand from foam, clay, latex and wire. Despite all the arduous toil, Tippett sees "Mad God" as a form of therapy and a way to reconnect with a time when special effects and animation were all done by hand.

GRUFF | A Short Film by Righteous Robot

02.03.2024
GRUFF is a handmade, paper short film I've been designing, building, puppeteering, and editing across almost three years. It's a story about the people you know love you, but aren’t exactly verbal about it. It’s how I've processed my dad’s passing, and learned how to love people who don't love exactly like me. I believe we all have individuals in our lives, related or not, that pride themselves as the "strong silent types". Through this short film, I hope all of us can learn to empathize, connect, and more deeply love the those who have so much more to say than we think, and just need us to listen.
The art of "Gruff," a film that's handmade

CBS Sunday Morning - 10.03.2024 #animation

A new short film called "Gruff" features extraordinary artwork by filmmaker Julian Curi. But it's not computer animation. Curi drew all of his characters and backgrounds by hand on paper, manipulated his drawings like puppets before the camera, and used computers to erase the wires, giving his film a uniquely intimate feel. The film centers on the relationship between its heroine, Hazel, and her emotionally distant father, Abuelo, a character loosrly based on Curi's own father. Curi talks with correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti about creating his unique film, which got its start via crowdsourcing on Kickstarter.
