Does anyone have any recommendations for games with a great story and great characters. I'm fine with any type of gameplay except for side-scrolling though I do prefer turn-based. Graphics-wise I'm not too picky and it doesn't matter how old the game is as well. I prefer it to be playable on PS4/PS5. I'm planning on buying a Nintendo switch next year so I guess any games playable on that as well. Basically, I'm looking for games similar to what I've played below - Trails in the Sky 1-3 Trails of Cold Steel 1-4 Persona 5/Royal/Strikers Tales of Berseria Atelier Ryza Dragon Quest XI Final Fantasy (I've only played X, 7R, Type-0, and XV. I started IV but didn't get to finish it) Shadow Hearts 1-2 (didn't finish 3 because it wasn't Yuri anymore lol) Ni no Kuni II I am Setsuna Edit 1: I have played other games like witcher 3, and the usual PS4 exclusives. Just looking for similar type of game as above listed. Edit 2: I added more games on the list similar to what I'm looking for.
Not really similar but dragon age: inquisition dragons dogma Final fantasy series Divinity original sin 2 Baldurs gate 3 Pillars of eternity Bastion Bandai Ni No Kuni II The Rebirth Of A Kingdom
@natsume142 yes! I've actually played Persona 3 FES but didn't get to finish it. Odin Sphere - this was recommended to me before as well but side-scrolling perspective turned me off...but considering how many times I saw this rec, I might push myself it check it out. @justmehere Is Secret of Mana better than Trials of Mana? I did play Trials of Mana as Hawkeye and it's kinda ok, did not really get me in the mood to check out other characters. Lufia looks interesting. It feels like Legend of Heroes type of series which i really like but looks like it will be hard to find where to play it. I have Disgaea 5 but Seraphina is so irritating to me lol I had to take a break from it for now. @gcool oh! I've actually played Ni No Kuni II and Dragon Age: Inquisition and absolutely loved them! Kinda wish there was more to ni no kuni II tho, it felt like I finished it too soon lol. Others I'm not as familiar so I'll definitely check it out when i have time later thanks!
In my top 3 of best story and characters of all time is a game trilogy. I see them as one game. You have to play them in this order for the best enjoyment: 1. Utawererumono Mask of Deception 2. Utawererumono Prelude of the Fallen (You can play this first, but it's really better like this imo) 3. Utawererumono Mask of Truth Btw, I also played the persona series, Trails in the sky, Trails of Cold Steel, Zero and Ao no Kiseki, almost all FF games etc. You really should play Zero and Ao no Kiseki. They are the "Crosbell" games and belong to the "Trails of" series. There is a eng fan patch on the internet I played them both first on my PSP and later on my vita, as they relased a remaster of both games.
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga -turn based combat, RPG, gameboy though (get an emulator, I guess), no side scrolling.
No one has suggested pathfinder: wrath of the rightous Yakuza: like a dragon God of War (the newest one) Fire Emblem series The Witcher series FF tactics war of the lions Ender Lilies (these are pretty outdated) Chrono Trigger Legend of Dragoon Chrono Cross Tales of Symphonia Star Ocean 2 Vagrant Story Lunar Series Golden Sun Lufia 2 Shadow Hearts Shadow Hearts: Conavent Grandia 2 Xenogears Skies of Arcadia Tactics Ogre: let us cling together yet
Assassin' Creed series Tales series Kena: Bridge of Spirits Rot Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin Hades Dead Cells (a challenging but fun game) Hollow Knight Bayonetta and Devil May Cry series, ofc (use keyboard to play them is hard) Horizon Zero Dawn Fallout 3 & 4 (a bit off-topic, though) Ori series (You will cry from the opening to the end of this series) Dragon Age series (Inquisition is good, but the whole series is impressive, you should give 2 previous games a try too) Bandai Namco games such as Scarlet Nexus, Dark Souls, Code Vein, etc. The Witcher series (I haven't played 1, but 2 is good, and 3 is one of best RPG)
Is Secret of Mana better than Trials of Mana? I did play Trials of Mana as Hawkeye and it's kinda ok, did not really get me in the mood to check out other characters.
If you didn't like the gameplay of trials of mana then i wouldn't play secret of mana, while i think personally secret of mana is a great game the gameplay is similar, but if you did like it i would check it out. The gameplay is similar but you dont actually choose characters and the story is linear while in trials of mana the story can change depending on who you decide to recruit and play as. My personal favorite mana game is Legend of Mana for the ps1 however. A suggestion that i have is to take good care of your ps4, you cant play ps classic games on the ps5, so the big library of ps1 games you cant play them of the ps5 kinda sucks but sony has been kinda letting us gamers down since the american corporate takeover.
For the record, Disgaea 5 has the worst storyline/characters in the franchise by a gigantic margin. Disgaea 4 still has great gameplay, but has a much better story, so maybe you could try that one out. As for other recommendations... I know you said for console, but Last Dream (on Steam) is a pretty great game as far as gameplay goes... The story isn't that bad, but it also isn't the focus of the game, so like... Don't expect an amazing storyline/characters, but the gameplay is definitely top-notch~
Secret of mana was the first game of the series. I've seen trials of mana, it has a complicated job system. Secret of mana was way more simple. Do keep in mind all the games I've mentioned was old school games that you can only play on emulators nowadays. The last rpg that I was heavily invested on was Starwars Kotor. Disgaea (1) was the funniest rpg ive ever played. The most touching RPG ive played is FF7 (I'm still cursing sepiroth for killing aerith and I'm still hoping they will revive her on the remake)
Someone already recommended Pathfinder: Wrath of the righteous, so I will suggest trying the first game made by the same developers Pathfinder : Kingmaker. also consider trying Shadowrun: Dragonfall and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. they are pretty good if short games.
Hmm it seems that we have a similar taste in RPG For switch, I'd recommend: Bravely Default Shin Megami Tensei V Octopath Traveler Fire Emblem Three Houses Ni no Kuni Monster Hunter Stories
I recommend the whole YS series and the Tales Series also Try Elona+ if you're interested here's an introductory video
Good RPGs? RPG-7 is pretty popular though a lot of people swear by RPG-32 these days. Joking to off, your RPG tastes seem similar to mine but really outstanding RPGs are very rare IMO. The ones that come to mind immediately besides the ones you mentioned are Recetter and Valkyria Chronicles (the first one, the 4th one is rather... meh, too preachy and double standards). Recetter is an easy enter old game so you might want to check it out first and VC is pretty old, so it should be cheap to get. I'm currently on Genshin Impact and it doesn't seem to be too bad but the story is updated only every half year so you can catch up a bit too fast and get bored. Pick the sister. Having to look at a smug boy for your whole game is a bit too much, the sis is much cuter and nicer to look at. lol.
