A lot of people on this website put Japan on some pedestal, probably because they love anime and fantasize about going to Japan in hopes of living in a real life anime. So I just wanted to point out that Japan is extremely similar to America, or any other country in plenty of ways. Japan has racism as an artifact from a caste system, where the dirty jobs caste are marginalized. Couples will divorce if one finds out that another is descended from the "Burakumin" caste. Corporations were buying lists of people descended from the "Burakumin" to discriminate against. As well as other stuff you associate with discrimination groups (etc). Here's a decent source. Feel free to do more research on your own. Another problem is that while discrimination is illegal in Japan, the law is not enforced. Many places have "Japanese Only" rules. Here's a source. Feel free to google more on your own. That's all folks. I don't really plan on making a in depth analysis of either discrimination, nor do I believe I have covered all discrimination in Japan. Just a quick introduction in case anyone on this website believed that Japan was some paradise of equality. I just remembered a smack down I did on someone from this website who legit believed that Japan was free from discrimination while reading an article on debito so decided to make this thread because i was bored. Edit: I also found racism in Japan to be quite interesting as my old cultural anthropology textbook actually had a section dedicated to discrimination of Burakumin. Hope some people were mildly interested as well. What I find weird, is that with all the anime/manga I have read, not a single one touched upon the racism that is laced within Japanese society.
All country's have their good side shown when you see it on the outside, but when you took a look closer, its the same as your own country. Not always the same though.
im here for the salt desu~ also if I wanted rainbows and shit i'd go canada or maybe greenland ... internet would be shit on the later tho.... but meh desu~
Ok, so what? Better them be xenophobic than another muslim/chinese paradise. I don't care about equality. Bring me more manga.
well, I for one believe that some form of discrimination exists everywhere, including my country and Japan and what not. There is no paradise...bed?
Dude, Greenland is one of the most depressing countries in the world. Incredibly high suicide and rape rate over there. Edit: Canada is pretty shit atm too, not for the same reasons though.
If you found a country supposedly free of discrimination, then : You're not looking hard enough They're good at covering it up You don't travel / mingle in the parts where discrimination occurs You're bribed by them to say there's no discrimination Reasons for discrimination vary, targets of discrimination vary, amount of people to discriminate vary etc.
I find this funny because I play Gears of War 4 sometimes with my Mexican freinds online. And whenever we see an enemy player sporting the Mexican flag, one of them starts cursing in Spanish and finishes by saying, "I hate Mexicans on this game."
that burakumin discrimination make me think, "if you hate butcher, who will give you meat? do you want to be a vegetarian?" *chukle*
hmmm meh its somewhere ill see if I can remember desu~ good news for greenland is if a virus breaks out they might survive the whole damn thing desu~
In a lot of ways, the US and Western Europe is actually pretty low on the discrimination scale in terms of absolute numbers. Asian cultures, be they South Asian or East Asian, are mired in millenia of discrimination and xenophobia, some of which is definitely an aftereffect of both a culture built on venerating the useful members of a society as well as some heritage from the colonial era
