Spoiler: Spoilers from the first 60 chapters The first chapter begins with Elise (FL) preparing to run away from her husband Rezet (ML), who is still asleep in bed. At the time of her escape, Elise believes she isn't pregnant since the physician hadn't found any signs of pregnancy, though they were still waiting for the blood test results to come back. Elise decides to run away because she assumes Rezet will inform the Emperor that she isn't pregnant, in which case Elise would be executed. After reading Elise's farewell letter, Rezet is violently upset and orders a search to bring her back. The physician informs Rezet that the blood test results came back to show that Elise actually is pregnant. The story then returns to a few months earlier, showing how they met and why they married. Elise is the imperial princess of the Argan Empire, which was invaded by a barbarian kingdom called Ugel. Elise escaped disguised as a commoner, but was captured by the army of another hostile country called Vanyela which is allied to Ugel. While in the army camp, Elise encounters Rezet, who is a Grand Duke of Vanyela. Rezet treats her courteously, but the Emperor of Vanyela sends orders that Elise must die. She is given the option of either committing suicide by poison or being escorted to the capital for a public execution. Elise chooses the second option, while hoping to get Rezet on her side during the journey to the capital. Once Rezet promises to bring Elise safely to the capital, Elise proceeds to stab herself in the shoulder. Elise continues to threaten self-harm throughout the whole journey so that Rezet is forced to remain at her side the whole time, just so he won't break his word to escort her safely. However, Rezet makes clear to her that he is loyal to the Emperor and has no intention of becoming her salvation from execution. Once they arrive in the capital, Elise escapes execution by telling the Emperor that she is already pregnant with Rezet's child. (In reality, they hadn't even slept together.) Rezet is unhappy about her lie, but Elise tells him that she desperately wants to live and is willing to carry his child. The reason Rezet's heir is so important to produce is because Rezet is a dragon hybrid that is exceptionally well turned out. Rezet has a beautiful human-like appearance, while some hybrids are born with dragon parts such as a reptilian head and have low intelligence. So the Emperor wants Rezet's exceptional bloodline to continue and create powerful offspring. However, human women never survive giving birth to dragon hybrids. Rezet's mother was also torn apart at his birth. So Rezet never wants to see that happen. But ultimately he agrees to a contract marriage with Elise for half a year.
