In this novel that I once read, there was this shepherd that used a slingshot to kill a giant, and he went on and finally become a king.

Scythe, staff (not for magic but honest-to-goodness combat), and BRICK!!!

 

One of the main reasons for swords is they are easily identifiable and understood. Even a young child can imagine how a sword is swung (even if inaccuarate) but some of the more exotic weapons would have people pulling a blank on what it is, or how its used.

EDIT: Just thought I would add, the only weapon I am trained in is the staff, although if I can find somewhere near where i live, i plan to take up archery

Well, it's historical novel, warring period, high fantasy too, with those angels, devils, barbarians, giants, and demons. Also politics too, with all those power struggles between royal members. It got quite a big harem too, 700 wives and 300 concubines. I understand that it's kinda unappealing to common readers.

Simple, classic Sword&Board
The "Sword" in xianxia is a rather light, swift, "gentle" sword, I'd prefer to get a bit of the classic knight in heavy armor with a heavier sword and a shield (yes, like the MC in SYWZ) and maybe even multiple of those in a line formation, alternatlivly give them spears as a main and a sword as a sub-weapon and have them shout "This is Sparta!"

Check out "I said make my abilities average", mile uses a Slingshot, at least for a time

Yeah, wive-snatcher David. Sending his subordinate to the front line to die just to wed his widow. That novel really rocks with all those scheming. It doesn't lose with all those reincarnated-as-good-for-nothing-miss novels.
